Daddy Counter-Downers

Matt left for a 12 day TDY this morning. Both Gabrielle and Colin were asking when Daddy was going to come home while I was making supper tonight. I tried to explain that Daddy was on tour, etc., but it wasn't quite working. Then I experienced an epiphany.

Remember in elementary school when you'd make the Christmas count down thing made out of construction paper? I remember it having a bell on top with a 24 link strand of construction paper chain. Then you'd tear one link off every night and once you'd torn of the 24th link then Santa would come that night.

So I made Daddy counter-downers for the kids. They have 12 links on them instead of 24 and they have a house on top instead of a bell. Regardless, they were a hit. The kids helped with the glue stick and choosing the color pattern of the links. We tore the first link off tonight before bed and hung the houses on the fridge. I'm not sure if they'll make it all 12 days...especially Colin's...but we'll give it a shot.

Here's a picture of the kids with their houses.

IA, SD, and NYC

***I just realized that this post has been sitting in draft form for about a month now. I guess I'll finally publish it now.***

Matt and I are really fortunate that we have about 4 weeks every year when we're off of work at the same time. This usually happens for 2 weeks around Christmas and for 2 weeks sometime during the summer. I'm off all summer long, or at least most of it, and Matt was off the first two weeks of June. After an especially stressful spring we/I decided that we were going to take advantage of our time off and take a real vacation. So, we bought tickets to NYC and added a couple of short trips to see the grandparents too.

First we went to IA to see Matt's parents and visit the farm. Colin has been absolutely in love with tractors lately but he wasn't to excited about Grandpa Kent's tractors. They're kind of big when you're used to seeing them in model size. He's content with riding the John Deere lawnmower...it's a tractor to him.

After about a day and a half in IA, we set off on the next leg of our trip toward Jefferson to drop the kids off with Grammie and Papa. I think they were a little nervous about us leaving--the kids, not my parents--but they did fine and had lots of fun on their vacation to SD. They still ask for the froggy slide.

NYC was a blast. I love the city and all of the walking and public transportation. We went to several museums, a concert of the New York Philharmonic, a barbeque festival, a cruise around the south end of Manhattan, the top of the Empire State Building, The Bodies exhibit and lots of other very cool stuff. Roxie was a very generous host and let us crash her place while we were there. The only down side was that we picked the hottest weekend in the history of the city...or maybe it just felt like it...to visit.

I think that NYC is a great place for people who don't have children. Every time we went somewhere or did something I was thinking about whether or not Gabby and Colin could handle that activity. I concluded that they could almost always handle the activity but that I would have a hard time getting them there. I don't think I could handle not having a car but still having to transport 2 toddlers. I'm sure people who live think what they do is perfectly normal and are well adjusted to living in a big city with little kids. They'd probably think I'm crazy for owning 4 car seats or 3 cars for that matter.

We will definitely be going back someday and maybe we'll even take the kids along at some point. We won't be crashing at Roxie's though since I'm pretty sure we'd exceed the maximum allowable number of people in a NYC aparment.

When we got back to SD to pick up the kids they were excited to see us but even more excited to see what we'd brought back for them. Gabrielle got an Ariel doll from the Disney store and Colin got an FDNY firetruck from FAO Schwartz. They were glad to come home but I they missed Grammie and Papa too.

Happy Birthday Colin

Today at 9:08am Colin turned 2 years old. I still can't believe he's 2 already since I'm pretty sure he was just born last week, but alas, it is true. We went through lots of the old pictures from June 2006 last night and relived some of his early days. In looking at the pictures I also noticed how much Gabby has changed so much in the last 2 years. She's more than doubled her age since Colin was born.

Anyway, we went and got Colin's pictures taken this afternoon and then went out for birthday supper at Jimmy John's. I know what you're thinking...you took your kid to a sub shop for his birthday. It's a big deal to him--he loves J.J.'s as we call it around our house.

Then we came home and Colin got to open one birthday gift. His party isn't until Saturday and I hadn't wrapped any of his gifts yet so he got to open the package he got yesterday from Auntie Roxie. It was an instant hit and he spent the better part of an hour riding it around the livingroom and taking it up and down the stairs with him. He didn't want Gabby to be able to get it. Eventually we convinced him to let G have a ride so she would stop moping around. (I'm not sure how she's going to handle Saturday.) Colin finally parked his fire truck before going to bed and gave it not one, not two, not even three, but four kisses goodnight. I'll update the standings after the party, but right now Aunt Roxie is winning the present of the year award.

Call BPS...I've been neglecting my blog

I'm sure that there is no such thing as Blog Protective Services, but if there was my blog would totally be in state custody being taken care of by someone who really cares about it. It's not that I don't care about my blog, but I really just haven't had the energy or drive to write lately. Now I've got several things to write about so I'll try to get them all down in the next couple of days or so.
